Black Star Projects is a full-service, design-oriented general contracting, and custom furnishings firm. From home remodels, renovations and restorations to new construction from the ground up, Black Star is committed to helping its clients achieve clarity in design and build through a collaborative process that emphasizes detail, distinctiveness and quality. We have now expanded to include custom furniture.

Although many contractors offer competent, capable and essentially interchangeable work, Black Star Building and Design offers something more. Bringing together various aesthetic influences from the worlds of art, architecture, photography and design, Black Star’s skilled team has the vision and expertise necessary to shepherd the most challenging projects from the conceptual to the actual. Ultimately, great design and skilled contracting should do more than simply reflect your lifestyle; they should improve your life. To realize this goal, Black Star applies an approach that addresses both the near and long-term desires of each client, to create authentic, livable and lasting spaces.

Some clients know exactly what they want, while others are looking for inspiration. Either way—whether the project is home, retail or commercial—the end result should benefit the client on multiple levels. To achieve this, Black Star’s founder Matthew Pope works closely with his customers to establish the big picture, and flesh out the small, but often defining details. This dialogue emphasizes function and longevity, as well as creating continuity between a project’s design and the architectural elements of the surrounding space.

Once the goals and parameters of a project have been established, Black Star works with its skilled network of artisans, designers and trades people to complete each aspect of the job fairly and efficiently. As a full-service, design-build company, Black Star oversees all the key details including sourcing, procurement, custom-design and fabrication of one-of-a-kind pieces.

Matthew Pope – Founder
Black Star Building and Design was founded by Matthew Pope. In addition to his decade of contracting experience – with an emphasis on renovations and authentic restorations – Matthew brings a wealth of related skills and creative influences to bear on every project. While studying literature, art history and photography in University during the late 1980s, Matthew began designing and crafting his own custom furniture. These early pieces laid the foundation for an aesthetic emphasizing clean lines and honest building materials, including raw surfaces, natural wood, stucco, plaster and concrete.

Matthew further refined both his technical and conceptual skills during ten years as a member of the mechanical special effects department of the IATSE film union in L.A. During this period, Matthew honed his expertise in all the key trades, including plumbing, electrical and carpentry, while working on such projects as Independence Day, Face Off and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

As a sought-after general contractor, Matthew gains inspiration from his extensive travels, his love of the arts and architecture, and his fascination with period design styles. An obsessive collector, and an expert at restoring buildings to their original style and condition, Matthew is comfortable working with and sourcing original materials for numerous styles, including Craftsman, Spanish, Mediterranean, Traditional and International Moderne. He is equally adept at reinterpreting classic styles to create elegant and inviting modern spaces that seamlessly combine the livable with the aspirational.

Every project is unique, taking its design genesis from the vision of the client, their life and needs, and the distinctive character of the space. With this in mind, Black Star Building and Design offers quality-focused, artisan-level work that’s grounded in an unpretentious, collaborative approach to client relationships. Because we are committed to integrity in business, we prefer to over-deliver, not over-promise. We invite you to view our work, and would be pleased to offer client references upon request.
